“Well-run libraries are filled with people because what a good library offers cannot be easily found elsewhere: an indoor public space in which you do not have to buy anything in order to stay.” Zadie Smith

ECIS LIBRARIAN'S CONFERENCE DAY 1

Este é o programa para o dia 12:

Keynote 1 por Doug JohnsonSchools And Libraries For The Net Generation
Abstract: Schools and libraries will be more effective if educators acknowledge the unique attributes and preferences of the Net Generation and adapt educational environments to suit students instead of trying to change their basic natures. This session looks at the unique attributes of today’s students and proposes a Net Gen learning environment.

Keynote 2 por Joyce Kasman Valenza - The Wizard of Apps (remixed)
Abstract If learners were iPhones, and we were the wizards who could "load" them with the really critical apps--or gifts--to inspire digital citizenship, information fluency, creativity, and collaboration, gifts they could take out into the world, how would we do it? Joyce and her students take us on a sing-along, musical exploration of those critical apps or gifts learners will need along the road. This presentation is a continually updated version of Joyce's K12 Online Keynote.

Aim – to provide a presentation about findings of a PhD study (with Charles Sturt University, Australia) which looked at what students, teachers and administrators thought of the impact and role of an international school library, and how they used the school library.  This was a study of a natural, ordinary situation, observing how all grade 11 and 12 students at the school (who were all DP students), interviewing specific grade 11 students through the two years of their Diploma candidature, and including library and non-library users. The study also interviewed six grade 12 students (from a previous year), to provide comparisons. 10 teachers and a principal and deputy principal were also interviewed. (There is one other published study of the library role in the IBDP, which surveyed students after their extended essay. The study being presented looks at core and subject aspects of the DP.)  Findings as presented will be discussed in the context of existing literature (where relevant) to provide comparison or contrasts.
