“Well-run libraries are filled with people because what a good library offers cannot be easily found elsewhere: an indoor public space in which you do not have to buy anything in order to stay.” Zadie Smith

APOIO INDIVIDUAL AOS ALUNOS NO PROCESSO DE PESQUISA
I would highly recommend that librarians build into the extended essay process a mandatory scheduled meeting with each individual student in the early stages of their research. I have begun doing this this year and it is working very well with our 52 candidates. The meetings take place during one month and can be as short as 10 minutes. It is a wonderful opportunity to introduce the students to relevant print and electronic resources and get them started on their research. These conversations in the initial stages also reinforce the seriousness of the extended essay and increase their motivation to get down to work. I was reminded of the advantages of this today when I met Filipe in the corridor and he was punching the air in celebration of an article I had sent him from a local magazine about the telecommunications industry in Luxembourg - the topic of his extended essay. It is unlikely that he would have found this himself as he has neither the time nor the inclination to be coming to the library every week to check what is new on his topic in the 60-odd periodical and newspaper titles we provide. I daily skim and scan all the newspapers and periodicals as they arrive for articles for all my teachers and also for extended essay students. Since I know what the former are teaching and the latter are researching I can provide them with potentially useful articles. Of course we do not have books to cover all the specialised topics which students choose (especially in history and literature) so during our meeting we identify relevant sources in the library and then, if necessary, the student works with their supervisor to choose other monographs which I order from Amazon. They arrive very quickly which again impresses the students and feeds their motivation. My IB coordinator is extremely supportive and appreciative as are my teaching colleagues. And the library materials are used optimally for the benefit of all. [publicado com autorização expressa da Pat]
